Closed Boarders 3 Day Trek - High Country Horses - Susan Miller Photography

Closed Borders – 3 Day Treks

For Intermediate to Experienced Riders

We have taken the very best of our five day ride and created the ultimate short break for our landlocked kiwis.  With three days of pure backcountry riding and two nights glamping at our NZ mustering huts in the heart of both the Rees and Dart Valleys, this is truly the finest Kiwi adventure.

Day One, meet your horse for the next three days, before criss crossing up the alluvial Rees River flats to our first backcountry Mustering Hut.  The Rees Valley Station is a 37,000 acre Merino and beef farm and has been with the same family for over 100 years.  The first night will be spent at the original Arthurs Creek Musterer’s Hut bordering Mt Aspiring National Park.

Optional Extra:  Teamed with Heli Glenorchy we can organise you very own private helicopter to arrive at our musters hut and whisk you and your group off into the mountains to get a birds-eye view of where you have ridden and where you will be heading next.  Your pilot will then land for you to have the opportunity to have a wander around and take in these spectacular Alpine views.  (Price is extra.  Minimum 3 people.)

On Day Two, after a hearty breakfast, we explore the Rees Valley with its glacial fed rivers and wild, untamed beauty. as you cross around the Southern side of Mount Alfred and drop down into the Dart Valley and into Paradise.  Our cozy rustic backcountry hut “The Boiler Room” for the night.

On Day Three, through enchanted landscapes made world-famous from blockbuster movies like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Mission Impossible and The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe before heading back to the horse yards for a well deserved beverage.

What they say

RIDING LEVELS

WE LOVE OUR HORSES AND WE WANT YOU TO LOVE THEM TOO!

SAFETY:  The safety of our horses, staff and clients are paramount.  While every effort is taken to match one of our horses temperaments with the riders ability,  it is important to remember that a horse has a mind of its own and so a good account of your riding experience and ability is imperative to ensure you have an enjoyable time.  We have a variety of horses that are suited to different riding levels, please consider the guide below before selecting your riding level.

What Rider Level Best Describes You?

(A) EXPERIENCED  Someone who has ridden for a number of years and is confident on any horses with any temperaments.  A person who will enjoy a forward responsive horse.
(B) INTERMEDIATE  Someone who can rise to the trot and sit to a canter comfortably, and can control their horse within, and independently, of the group.  A person who will enjoy a more responsive horse.
(C&D) BEGINNER  Someone who has never ridden before or has only ridden a few times in a controlled environment.  Or someone who has lost their nerve and just wants to go quietly to enjoy the view and be with their quiet natured horse.

ALL CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14 YEARS OLD AND UNDER MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN.

TRACK AND RIVER CONDITIONS:  Weather in the high country can be extremely changeable and therefore cause river and track conditions to become dangerous to ride across or to ride at a faster pace.  Therefore it is imperative each rider adheres to the direction of our qualified guide during the trek.  While every effort is made to accommodate the intermediate and experienced rider's wishes we must consider yours and our horse's safety first.
